In 2005 I had the rare opportunity to visit Midway Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. I was not alone when I arrived, there were 700,000 Laysan Albatross or "Gooney Birds" there to greet me. Got calamari "squid." The sea-bird breeds mainly on atolls in the Hawaiian Archipelago and flies into the North Pacific Ocean from July to November. When the young birds are fledging or first attempting to fly, its a good time to stay out of the water for the Tiger sharks are there waiting just below the surface for a snack.
I spent a couple days exploring the island and two days photographing shipwrecks underwater... see http://shipwreckbob.blogspot.com/2008/11/uss-macaw.html
