Sixty seven years ago today the Union Oil tanker Montebello was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-21 and sunk off Cambria, California near Hearst Castle. Sitting in nearly 900 feet of water the tanker sits upright covered in nets. One of these photographs is the lifeboat davits in the lowered position since the crew of 38 were forced to abandoned the ship as they were fired upon with deck gun fire from the I-21. Fortunately all survived including my friend Richard Quincy.
