Point Sur Light Station

Along the Central Coast of California on the Big Sur coastline is where the Point Sur Light Station is located. The lighthouse was completed in 1889 and the first-order Fresnel lens is now on exhibit at the Monterey Maritime and History Museum in Monterey. Next week marks the 74th anniversary of one very unique air disaster where people were not on the wings of an aircraft waiting for a water rescue but were riding an airship down into the Pacific. On February 12, 1935 the USS MACON went down with 83 U.S. Navy sailors, fortunately only two fatalities. On Monday February 9th the National Geographic Channel will feature a documentary and include underwater footage of the airship in 1600 feet of water. You might even catch a glimpse of "Shipwreck Bob" at work.
